CHEAP, FAST & FURIOUS

CHEAP, FAST & FURIOUS
GREEN PAPAYA ART PROJECTS, FEB 2, 6PM ONWARDS

Eric Van Hove
ARTIST TALK AND VIDEO SCREENING
6-7 pm February 2 only

Eric Van Hove, currently artist-in-residence at Green Papaya Art Projects, will give a presentation of his recent works and site specific installations in Senegal, Japan, Iran and Egypt which includes a video piece (Abreaction series) made during the Shanghai Biennial in 2004. The talk will be followed by discussions on the use of the “broader public space” - meaning the foreign public space - for artistic interventions pondering such ideas as apartheid and diaspora and show how working with such spaces offers an appropriate catalyst for engaging with issues of today if such might be the intention.
He will also introduce a recent work, Off the record, where the artist created a short-lasting tactical art platform by hi-jacking a recently installed cellphone-run locker system in Tokyo. (Off the record = www.transcri.be/projects/offtherecord.html)
Born in Guelma, Algeria in 1975, Van Hove was educated in Cameroon, Belgium and Japan, studying contemporary art (BA, Brussels), Traditional Japanese Calligraphy (MFA, Tokyo) and is currently a PhD candidate of the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music. He has been based in Tokyo, Japan since 2001.

Conrado Velasco
<1:1000>
WORK-IN-SITU, DRAWINGS, PHOTOS
6 pm-12 midnight Fri & Sat until February 24

Conrado Velasco’s multi-discipline approach blurs the boundaries between art and design. More than two decades of artistic output in three continents has produced a range of work in the fields of architecture, sculpture, painting, graphic design, photography and product design.
Presently he is focusing his time creating sculptures and large-scale 2d artworks. His graphics-based approach, more akin to the production of typography, icons or logos, is used to create stripped-down aesthetic. Often, attributes like depth, texture, and perspective are jettisoned. What is left is a “skin” that holds very little information aside from pigment. This creates highly legible forms optimized for speed scanning.
His newly-installed public sculpture (TINSTAEJ No. 85) at Fort Bonifacio Garden Promenade is an example of this approach. It’s a sculpture that has more in common with typography and graphics than sculpture.
For Green Papaya, Conrado is presenting a work called 1:1000. Also on exhibit are production drawings and photos of TINSTAEJ Series No. 85 (There Is No Such Thing As Endless Joy).

It also makes available works considered to be more experimental and which are not usually seen in mainstream gallery exhibitions – enough reason for these works to be considered valuable to private/corporate collections. Minus the standard gallery mark-up of 40%, collector-friends and first-time buyers stand to benefit and enjoy from the night market.
